          <datacite:description descriptionType="Abstract">Public libraries are currently expanding efforts to actively offer health, sickness, and medical treatmentrelated　information to citizens. Although the amount of such health and medical information services at　public libraries is increasing, the content quality is extremely poor.
While it can be said that the existence of a nearby, familiar space that in itself enables the public to　come into contact with health and medical information is beneficial, I have heard that patients who actually　visited this area were often disappointed.
This is because of the severe lack of variety and content of the materials offered in such a place. The　cause of this is not a lack of funds for these materials, but rather a lack of clarity in the initial concept of　what is needed for a collection of health and medical information for the public, as well as a superficial understanding of this topic among those compiling the collection.
The tendency to select materials that are not in line with patient needs and an excessive fear of medical　textbooks arising from sometimes-lacking expert knowledge are the greatest obstacles to providing materials that are suitable for patients’ self-use.
In order to overcome this deficiency in public libraries and offer a health and medical information　service that is useful to patients, I would like to consider what information is required by patients through examples I have selected.
As a patient myself who has sought medical and health information in public libraries and as a person　who raised the issue of services that go beyond the actual library facility, I would like to make a proposal to further improve library health and medical information services to make this space more useful.</datacite:description>
