If it is a good smell, it is referred to as a fragrance or perfume. If not, it is referred to as something that stinks or a stench. Material that gives a useful smell for human life is called a fragrance. This paper is on how strong good smells affects human life and the body; what kind of function and what effect they have on people; how they have had an influence on the fine arts, etc. These will be discussed from the viewpoint of culture and life. Fragrances have played an important role in the development of human civilization for a long time. It is said that little, in the way of research, has been carried out regarding smell and the sense of smell. First of all, the focus of the discussion is on the definition of smell, explanation of typical types of fragrances, and classification of fragrances. Next, the usefulness of fragrance and "Aromatherapie", which Gattefosse, the French comparative pathologist, devised in 1930, in discussed.
