The process by which local university colleges were granted university status tends to focus on the influence of normative institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge.\nSir Oliver Joseph Lodge, a physicist, became the first principal of the new University of Birmingham in 1900 at the invitation of Joseph Chamberlain. Lodge’s rise to　prominence was quite remarkable for a man without a public school or Oxbridge education, who only began his own higher education at the age of twenty-two.
