| 内容記述 | The Hara clan, an artistic lineage of Imperial court painters in early modern Kyoto, continued into the modern period through several generations: from its founder Zaichu (1750-1837), to his son Zaimei(1778-1844), Zaimei’s adopted son Zaisho (1813-1872), and Zaisho’s adopted son Zaisen (1849-1916). The family’s archival documents, collectively known as the Hara-ke Monjo, are currently preserved at the Kyoto Institute, Library and Archives. Among these records, Man-ki (also known as Yorozu-no-ki) is a diary written by Zaimei that documents the period from August 1839 to December 1841 (Tenpō 10-12). In addition to detailed accounts of painting commissions, production processes, and negotiations over remuneration, the diary also records kinship relations, gift exchanges, and everyday social interactions within the neighborhood. One notable entry dated 13 June 1840 describes a commission request from Youkenji, a Buddhist temple located in present-day Saiki City, Ōita Prefecture, far from Kyoto. Youkenji served as the family temple (bodaiji) of the Mōri clan, the lords of Saiki Castle. Research conducted at the temple indicates that no works by Zaimei are currently extant there. Furthermore, the former abbot Tsūō, who initiated the commission, passed away approximately one month after submitting the request, making it likely that the planned work was never produced. However, the investigation also revealed the existence of a previously unknown painting by Zaichu, titled Shaka-Jūroku-zenshin-zō (Buddha and Sixteen Protective Deities of the Daihannya Sūtras), dated 1826. In addition, it was confirmed that another work, a Nehan-zu (Nirvana), once existed at the temple but was destroyed in a fire that consumed the main hall in 1927. These findings demonstrate that a connection between the Hara family and Youkenji Temple had already been established fourteen years prior to the commission request recorded in 1840. This case illustrates that the relationship between Imperial court painters in Kyoto and regional areas was mediated by Buddhist monks affiliated with temples that maintained ties to their head temples in Kyoto. |
