| 内容記述 | This paper aims to examine John Dewey’s concept of “Quality” from the perspectives of music education and writing education, using the children’s magazine Akai Tori (Red Bird) as its point of reference. Akai Tori was a children’s magazine founded by Suzuki Miekichi and published in Tokyo from 1918 (Taishō 7) to 1936 (Shōwa 11). Suzuki criticized conventional children’s literature from an artistic standpoint and, together with prominent writers, composers, and painters who shared his vision, sought to disseminate artistic children’s literature. This endeavor gave rise to a social movement known as the “Akai Tori Movement.” Distinguished poets, novelists, and artists̶often regarded as masters of Japanese literature̶participated in this movement and devoted themselves wholeheartedly to the creation of songs and stories for children. The historical fact that these artists earnestly produced a large body of literary works and songs specifically for children is a uniquely remarkable characteristic of Akai Tori in Japan. This study first considers the children’s songs and tsuzurikata (life-writing compositions) published in Akai Tori from the perspective of Dewey’s notion of “Quality.” It then examines approaches to this capacity from the standpoints of music education and language education. Finally, it explores the insights and limitations that contemporary education can derive from Akai Tori. |
