First, in order to identify the characteristics of children’s imaginative power,  I discuss four types of play song by comparing with Vygotsky’s ‘four basic ways of linking imagination with reality’. I then compare characters featured in the historical children’s songs of Hiroshima Prefecture with those of play songs sung in Japan today and examine the changes and nature of the imagined content.
