They intended to study nervous system properties by laboratory investigation of vegetative and motor responses which are thought to reflect the basic properties of the nervous system. An important finding by Teplov and Nebylitsyn was that strength of excitation is inversely related to sensitivity of the nervous system. The Pavlovian concepts of excitation and inhibition and that of balance between the two processes were used by Eysenck (1947,1957) as the main neurological constructs,he explained the physiological basis of extraversion / introversion. Strelau (1972 b) developed a questionnaire,the Strelau Temperament Inventory (STI). The STI consists of three scles which are named in accordance with Pavlovian terms and which refer to individual behaviour in social and work situations that might be determined by the hypothetical properties of the nervous system.
