In making garments，we cannot neglect the function of the garment. The aim of our series of studies is，therefore，to observe the changes found in various postures of the body (which is the basic factor in making clothes)，to specify the measurements after careful and accurate measurement of parts of the body in each posture or form, and thus to make the paper patterns with full consideration of the function of the garment，and then to obtain data for the development and sewing of garments. In the former studies，we examined the waist sizes necessary for the making of skirts, slacks, pajamas and shorts, by taking measures of a group of subjects, first, 406 women students of Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior College，aged 18 and 19 (1957-1961)，and second，408 pupils of Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior High School, aged 12, 13 and 14 (1958, 1962), and third, 314 students of Hiroshima Jogakuin Senior High School，aged 15, 16 and 17 (1963). The results of each examination were reported in Essays & Studies，Hiroshima Jogakuin College; Vol. 11, 1961, Vol. 12, 1962 and Vol. 13, 1963, respectively. In 1963，we made a simultaneous survey of 793 subjects，covering 249 pupi1s of the Junior High School，aged 12，13 and 14，314 girl students of the Senior High School，aged 15，16 and 17 and 230 women students of the Junior College，aged 18 and 19. The results were arranged and examined and a minute comparison was made among them. From the above results we have been able to obtain the variations in the waist sizes of the gir1s aged from 12 to 19 (Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior，Senior High Schools and Junior College). This，together with the results of the studies concerning the thickness of the materials，shrinkage in sewing，comfortableness and physiological effect of the garment，enabled us to determine the waist size. We wi1l pursue simi1ar studies by measuring continuously the other parts of the body as well as the waist，so that we may consider the bodily growth from a viewpoint of garment construction and thus specify the size of the garment. |
