内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Relative clauses have been classified into restrictive relative clauses (RRCs) and non-restrictive or appositive relative clauses (ARCs). RRCs identify the regerence of their antevedents; ARCs, having no referent-identifying function, provide their antecedent with additional information. Based on Quirk et al.'s (1986) observation abut correlations between ARCs and the quantifier all are incompatible when the content of the former bears a causal (cause-effect) relation to that of main clauses. He claims that this constraint stems from functional redundancy of the reason-denoting ARC and the quantifier: reason always has to apply ti all members of a relevant set of entities, while the quantifier, all, quantifies over a relevant set of entities. Miki (2001) claims against Tanaka (2000) that ARCs, unlike RRcs, cannot denote reason for the content of main clauses. He defines causal relations as those in which participants are singled out in a one-and-only way. According to Miki (2001), it is not ARC's but RRCs that may be in a causal relation to the content of the main clause, because only the latter have a "set-restricting" function. The puepose of this paper is to compare the ARC with the RRC in terms of their logical relations to the main clause. i first examine Miki's (2001) claim that RRCs can express reason for the content of the main clause but ARCs cannot. I argue afainst Miki (2001) that the latter may also denote reson no less strongly than RRCs. Secondly, I survey descriptions of ARCs and RRCs in the loterature and show what kind of logical relations they may bear to the main clause. I also point out that the set-restricting function of RRCs is not a necessary coundition for causal relations.
