| 内容記述 | In the seventeenth century, anti-masques represent evils as allegorical figures. In Royalist masques which pay homage to monarchs, the value of good and evil is often in relative position. Especiallu in thomas Carew's Coelum Britanicum Performed in 1634, Mercury who is Jove's massanger tries to expel vices from heaven while rebellious Momus sees some values in these vices. By contrast, in 1634, Milton recreates Comus as a composite figure made of evil natures of Circe, of Bacchus and of himself, and therefore, the existence of Comus has to be completely denied. The two masques, however, share some cultural aspects in common. The children of Earl of Bridgewater participated in both performances, and Henry Lawes who was music teacher to them composed music for both masques. Therefore it could be said that the two authors belonged to similar culural milieu in the year of 1634. | |||||||||||
