In recent years we have received a number of inquiries from students related to the possibility of engaging in volunteer activities. We understand that many students are eager to make a positive and meaningful contribution to society, but in some cases they are unsure about how to go about it. In an effort to respond to students' desire to participate in volunteer activities, one of the writers of this paper, who is in charge of coordinating an induction class called Voluntary Theory, has built up a cooperative network of those within the campus who possess a voluntary spirit.. They have discussed how best to support students' volunteer activities, including a look at the possibility of systematically combining lectures with off-campus volunteer activities. A plan to establish the Volunteer Center is also under way with an aim to facilitate students' volunteer activities. This paper is a report on the discussions regarding the support for volunteer activities at Hiroshima Jogakuin University in the 2008 academic year, and also an analysis of it from the viewpoint of faculty development. |
