This study attempted to examine possible changes in Japanese university students’ learning strategies, motivation, and beliefs in English-language learning through a 2-week study abroad program conducted in California, USA. Survey 1 compared the English proficiency, learning strategies and motivation of students participating in the program with those of students who did not participate. The results showed that no differences were observed for these variables. Survey 2 investigated whether there were significant changes in participants’ strategy use, motivation and beliefs in Englishlanguage learning through the program. The results showed that significant tendencies were detected in increases in memory-related and cognitive and affective strategy uses. Additionally, a significant tendency was observed in the decrease in motivation for English-language learning. Survey 3 analyzed students’ essays about their experience of the program. The results showed that while those who showed an increase or slight decrease in their motivation seemed to obtain more abstract lessons and determination for English-language learning from their experience, those who showed a greater decrease in motivation seemed to enjoy the life experience itself. |
