内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This study examines the potential application of "Twiddle Muff," a tool used in dementia care in the UK, for supporting children with developmental disabilities. According to a survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, 8.8% of students in regular classes may have developmental disabilities, and many cases lack adequate support. In the context of early childhood education, establishing concrete methods to support children with developmental disabilities or related characteristics is an urgent issue.
Twiddle Muff, which stimulates tactile and visual senses to provide comfort and reduce anxiety, shows promise as a tool for emotional and environmental regulation for children with developmental disabilities. In this study, eight types of Twiddle Muffs, created by students, were introduced to children at a Child Development Support Center, and the effects were observed through interactions. The results showed that Twiddle Muffs based on tactile and visual stimuli helped stabilize emotions and facilitate communication between the students and the children. However, it was also revealed that the design of the Twiddle Muff and its usage context need to be carefully tailored to each child.
In addition, a specialized "Tactile Pressure Muff" was developed and introduced, which applies deep pressure stimulation to provide a sense of security for children prone to anxiety or overstimulation. This Tactile Pressure Muff demonstrated further potential in improving emotional stability and attention in some children, highlighting its effectiveness in regulating sensory responses. However, the optimal design and pressure levels varied among individuals, requiring customization based on the child's specific needs.
This study highlights the potential of both Twiddle Muffs and Tactile Pressure Muffs as new support tools for children with developmental disabilities and provides insights for the development of future support methods.
