| 内容記述 | In the late nineteenth century England, colleges were founded in the industrial city of the north. These civic foundations were not the result of any central initiative, but the work of local benefactors with their roots in industry and commerce. The earliest ones were all in the industrial cities of the north and midlands. Most of these colleges started with a strong scientific emphasis. Because of limited financial resources and its lack of degree-giving status, the teaching was for part time and evening students, and the number studying for degrees were small. Birmingham gained its charter in 1900. It was largely owed to Joseph Chamberlain’s effort. Civic universities created a distinctive conception of the University. |
