| 内容記述 | This paper examines the themes and techniques of George Eliot's two short stories, "The Lifted Veil" and "Brother Jacob." Neither of them has been so much valued as her other works since their publication, but it is significant to analyze their features in relation to her novels, considering the fact that Eliot thought of her works as belonging to "successive mental phases," and wished them to be published in the order in which they were written. In "The Lifted Veil," Eliot presents man's intense hatred and his corresponding sense of guilt in a story with a similar setting and characters to those of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. This story is the forerunner of Daniel Deronda not only in its theme but also in its technique of using a picture as a psychological correlative. The other story, "Brother Jacob," is closely related to Romola in characterization and plot. The use of such images as beautiful lozenges and corruption contributes to the irony of the story. Eliot, rather on impulse, wrote both of these short stories while she was planning a long novel, and we find in them important themes and imagery which were to be developed in her later novels. | |||||||||||
