| 内容記述 | Zora Neale Hurston published her first novel, Jonah's Gourd Vine, in 1934. What first catches our attention is that the protagonist of this novel, John Buddy Pearson, was born in Notasulga, Alabama. What is said about John in this novel is very similar to Hurston's father's personal history. From this novel, we can conjecture that Hurston was born in Notasulga, not in Eatonville. In addition to this kind of autobiographical aspect, this novel tells us how black people were split in terms of identitiy. For example, they were split between Northern and Southern values, the white and the black people's ways of thinking. Christian and African or voodoo concepts, etc. They were also dangling between weakness, which is represented by poverty, and strength, which is symbolized by masculinity. What Hurston tries to exemplify is that they have to transcend this split and dichotomized condition. | |||||||||||
