内容記述 | Ohtomo-no-Yakamochi wrote an elegy, that is funeral songs, (3 volumes, 475-480), mourning over the death of Prince Asaka, the son of Emperor Shomu in the 16th year of Tenpyo, when he turned to be 27 years of age. Because he was Udoneri, a government official serving an emperor, and because the elegy was voluminous enough to be a work to present to the emperor, consisting of six poems including two long poems, some people believe that he wrote them at an official request. However, I demonstrated that he was motivated to write the elegy by his personal feelings. He took the occasion of a memorial service of Buddhism to express his own sentimen, even though he might have home in mind as a government official, the possible presentation of his elegy to the emperor. It is pointed out that the poems that he wrote when he was still studying poetry writing were mostly imitations. When poems are evaluated from the viewpoint of originality, imitations are always undervalued. However, even though he wrote his poems based on tradition, they were not mere imitations of others. He made efforts to sublime them in the traditional expression, which was his attempts in his studying period. The elegy of Prince Asaka specifically shows such efforts of his. When we read his poems, we recognize the coexistence of an individual and a government official without any contradiction. If we pay too much attention to his specific title, we may lose the essence of his poems. | |||||||||||
