| 内容記述 | It seems that Alice Walker wanted to make a sort of conculsion about what she had thought so far in her third novel, The Color Purple. From this point of view, her people in this novel go through the same experiences as other people in her former two novels did. In addition to this, their responsibility in The Color Purple is to make the third step, which should be a kind of goal for Alice Walker at that moment. After experiencing the suffering by the mass pressure as dependent individuals, they recognize themselves as independent individuals and then to try to find out mental bonds to tie them. It is possible to read The Color Purple in the concept of the individual vs. the mass like many other American novels in the 20th century. This means that Celie's suffering, for example, is not only women's one but also the individualm not mass, one; suffering that an independent person might be or is obliterated by the mass power. However, there are some contradictions when to try to read this novel from the viewpoint of the individual vs. mass structure. To make an analysis of its contradictions, in addition to reading The Color Purple in the concept of the individual vs. the mass, is another purpose of this paper. | |||||||||||
