内容記述 | During the past two decades have a series of reports been propouded which propose the introduction of English lanfuage teaching at the poblic primary school level in japan. These proposals have been proffered by several advisory councils to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Thy all seem to be consistent in that English language instrubion shool be manipulated in various manners from Year 3 not at a subject but as part of 'Education for International Understanding' during the 'Period for Integrated Study'. This view affects the aim and framework of professional preparation and develpment of trainee teachers and teachers-in-service. This article first recapitulates the essentials of these committee reports and examines the context in which English is team-taught as such by homeroom teachers and ALTs (Assistant Language Teachers). It then dscusses the extent of homeroom reacher's contributions as well as qualities of teachers for successful foreign language teaching at the primary school level. An example of teacher preparation curriculum is put forward by the author with illustration of subject matters to be covered at university as regards the theory and practice of teaching English to young Japanese learners. | |||||||||||
