| 内容記述 | It is generally accepted that adverbs are verbal elements, and hence cannot be modified by relative clauses. Eguchi (2002) claims, however, that Japanese arguably has a structure that allows so-called floating quantifiers with an adverbial property to undergo relatibization. The purpose of this paper is to describe the syntactic and semantic features of this kind of relative clause. l follow Eguchi in arguing that the relative clauses in question differ from ordinary ones in that they take a "scale expression" without a concrete cardinal (e.g.kazu ('unber')and ryou ('quantity')) as an antecedent, wheras ordinary relative clauses take an entity-denoting expression as an antecedent. I thus refer to the former type as "number/quantity-restricting" relative clauses, and to the latter type as "entity-restricting" relatibe clauses. My conclusion is that the raison d'être of the "number/quantity-restricting" relative clause construction is to count either the number of eventualities denoted by the relative clause or the quantity of entities involved in the eventualities and accumulated through those eventualities. | |||||||||||
