| 内容記述 | This is an introductory sketch of Zora Neale Hurston, who has been neglected literarily both in the United States of Ａmerica and Japan. I have been one of them so far. I once got a chance to read one of her short stories, "The Gilded Six-Bits," which gave me a slight shock. The reason is that she did not put an emphasis on Race, nor Class, but on people even though it was the period when protest novels were considered the best. This kind of her tendency as a writer must have caused literary negligence for her. However, in the United States, in the 1970's, she came to be reconsidered. A few collections of essays about Hurston were published from some publishing companies, e. g., Twayne's, Chelsea House's. In addition, Alice Walker, who is one of the most active present Black writers and substantially taught me Hurston's literary greatness, edited a collection of Hurston's works and essays about her. So Hurston was sort of dug up by Alice Walker. Furthermore, Robert Hemenway wrote her biography in 1977. Unfortunately, in Japan, only a few essays have been written about Hurston so far. In this paper, first of all, I'm planning to explain briefly about the evaluations toward Hurston which have been given to her so far. Secondly, I would like to follow and check her biographical matters. Thirdly, her four novels are explained from the viewpoints of main characters, their relations, outlines and interpretations. Fourthly, I try to read her and make an analysis of her fundamental way of thinking or her attitude as a person and writer. Finally, my focus in on Hurston's characteristics and my present evaluation about Hurston after having worked on her so far. | |||||||||||
